Sixteen

I shut the door behind her and slowly turned to find Dan staring at me, arms crossed.

“You lied to her.” He said disapprovingly. “She’s risking her life for you and you lied to her.”

“I didn’t lie.” I said sharply, “I just…omitted a few things.” I started walking back to the bar, frustrated.

“She’s put her neck pretty damn far out for you,” He said, following me, “The least you could do is-“

“I know!” I shouted, rounding on him, fists clenched tight at my side. He drew up in surprise. “You think I don’t know what she’s risking?” I hissed at him through clenched teeth. “You think I don’t know what will happen if the Adjudicators find out what she’s done? I know better than most Dan. I was the one they sent to deal with traitors remember?”

“Then why not tell her?” He said imploringly, “She deserves the truth. We have a lead on whoever is running this shadow war, no matter how tenuous. The Adjudicators have resources that we don’t. She could have taken it back and had them examine it. Maybe they could find some link-“

“And then have me executed me alongside whoever paid the trolls in the first place,” I said flatly. “Right now all we have is an old coin that may or may not mean something. If I’d given it to Heather, if I’d gone to the Adjudicators myself, they could have spent weeks examining it, if they even bothered to at all. I don’t have that kind of time, Dan. I’ve got 12 hours, maybe a bit more, maybe a bit less. We’re going to have to solve this one on our own.”

“But why not tell her about it at least?” he pressed, “Why hide it from her?”

“I don’t know,” I confessed, feeling my anger drain away. “Just a…feeling I guess. Something told me I needed to play this one close to my chest, so I did.”

“You don’t trust her?” he asked.

“It’s not that,” I shook my head, “I don’t know, it’s hard to explain.”

He looked at me doubtfully, “Ok Nate, I’ll follow your lead on this one. So how are you going to examine the coin? Work up some spell to determine its true nature or where it came from? Do you need to break out the incense and white robes?”

I started up the spiral staircase, “First I’m going to do is take a power nap. I’ve been up for 32 hours at this point; I need to rest before I fall over.

“What about after?” He called out to me.

I grinned at him before ascending out of sight, “Then we go grab some lunch.”
